READING, Pa. – Community leaders and survivors talked Thursday night about how gun violence affects them. They gathered at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in Reading for a panel discussion about the aftermath of gun violence.

State lawmakers, survivors of gun violence and family members of victims talked about what happens after a shooting and how to move forward.

An organizer says she lost one son to gun violence and has another who was just convicted of a homicide, both in Reading. She says it helps to speak about her grief as a mother.

"It was important to me to just voice that, allow other people to voice it," said Shaykayarira DelRio-Gonzalez, a parent advocate who also serves on the Reading School District Board of Directors. "It's something that's never been spoken in our city. We've been through a lot of loss, especially since I was made aware with my own son."

Another woman says she survived an attempted homicide and also has lost multiple family members to gun violence. She says she hopes to start discussions that lead to policy changes to prevent gun violence.

"I think it gives me a lot of motivation to know that people want to know about how to prevent violence and also gives me strength to keep going and brings me healing to share my story," said Rosalind Pichardo, a survivor and panelist from Philadelphia.

State Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz said lawmakers need to come together and find permanent solutions to protect citizens. She also wants neighbors to help each other make their communities safer.
