PHILADELPHIA, PA — In a recent turn of events, a Philadelphia teenager, Zaire Wilson, 16, was released from custody after additional evidence revealed he was not involved in the January shooting at the Market-Frankford station that resulted in the death of 16-year-old Tyshaun Welles.

Wilson, who was arrested on January 11, 2024, by SEPTA Police following the incident, was exonerated when SEPTA surveillance footage and further investigation demonstrated that the actual assailant, Quadir Humphrey, 18, acted alone. Humphrey, apprehended separately by SEPTA Police on the day of the shooting, is being charged with murder and related offenses for firing into a crowd and fatally wounding Welles on January 11.

The critical surveillance video, which was not initially available to the District Attorney’s Office, clearly showed Wilson’s non-involvement, leading to a request by the DA’s Office for his release. Following a review and a hearing presided over by Judge Joffie Pittman, all charges against Wilson were dropped, and he was ordered to be released immediately on February 29, after a month and a half in custody.

District Attorney Larry Krasner emphasized the importance of the legal system’s responsiveness to new evidence in the interest of justice, highlighting the rapid actions taken to correct the wrongful detention of Wilson.
