Philly Put a Man Tried 4X in Charge of Police Oversight. He Just Got Arrested
No one could have seen this coming. Hassan Bennett, who was convicted of murder four times and served 11 years in prison for his role in the criminal justice system, has been appointed to the police oversight commission in Philadelphia. Bennett, a former bail navigator at the Defender Association of Philadelphia, is accused of selling confidential information about criminal cases to a defendant in a domestic violence case. The charges stem from a 2006 shooting where one person was killed and another was wounded. By the fourth trial in 2019, witnesses had recanted and blamed the cops. Bennett has claimed he was wrongfully convicted of murdering his friend due to police coercion. He sued the city for wrongful conviction and reached a $4 million settlement in 2025.
