Crash Kills USPS Truck Driver From Delco: Delaware State Police

A 59-year-old Yeadon man died when a Nissan crashed into a United States Postal Service truck he was driving early Monday in Wilmington. A 59-year-old man from Yeadon, Delaware, was killed in a crash on I-495 in Wilmington, according to Delaware State Police. The crash occurred about 2:12 a.m. Monday morning. The United States Postal Service (USPS) truck was traveling in the right lane on the northbound of I495 and a silver 2009 Nissan Altima was approaching the rear of the USPS truck at the same time. The Nissan struck the left-side of the Nissan's tires, leading the USPS to spin towards the eastern edge of the roadway, where it hit a raised metal guardrail and overturned down an embankment. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the Nissan driver, 31, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The roadway was closed for about 7 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The crash occurred at about 2:12 a.m. Monday I-495 in Wilmington, according to Delaware State Police. Killed was a 59-year-old man from Yeadon who was driving a United States Postal Service truck.

Police said a white 2020 International HV613 truck tractor belonging to the USPS was traveling in the right lane on I-495 northbound, north of Edgemoor Road. It did not have a trailer attached. At the same time, a silver 2009 Nissan Altima was traveling on I-495 northbound, approaching the rear of the USPS truck.

The right-side front of the Nissan struck the left-side rear tires of the USPS truck, police said. The USPS truck spun towards the eastern edge of the roadway, where it struck a raised metal guardrail and overturned down an embankment, according to police.

The truck came to a stop in the grassy area between I-495 and the railroad tracks, and the Nissan struck the guardrail along the right shoulder before it came to a stop in the northbound lanes of I-495. Police said the Yeadon man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not immediately made available.

The driver of the Nissan, a 31-year-old man from Middletown, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The roadway was closed for about 7 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared. Anyone who witnessed this crash is asked to contact Corporal P. McAndrew at 302-365-8486.
