Tim Bontemps, ESPN, March 28, 2024, 12:38 a.m. ET The LA Clippers defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 108-107 in a chaotic game, with team manager Kevin Scott stating that a foul occurred on a drive by 76ers forward Kelly Oubre Jr. during the game's final play. The refereeing crew initially interpreted this play as a vertical jump by the defender, but a video review later revealed a slight deviation of the defender to the left [Paul] George, indicating a foul should have been called. The incident occurred during a heated final minute, which included several criticisms, including a wedgie leading to a jump ball, two costly turnovers by the 76ers, and two and-1s by Clippers star Kawhi Leonard. Despite these challenges, 76ers coach Nick Nurse admitted that the team contributed to their own downfall. The loss leaves them in eighth place in the Eastern Conference and a potential opportunity to catch up on the sixth-seeded Indiana Pacers.

PHILADELPHIA – After the LA Clippers’ 108-107 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night, team manager Kevin Scott said in a pool report that a foul occurred on a drive by 76ers forward Kelly Oubre Jr. during the game’s final play .

“On the last play on the field, the crew interpreted that play in real time as a vertical jump by the defender,” Scott said. “In the video review after the game, however, we could observe a slight deviation of the defender to the left [Paul] George, and a foul should have been called.

The play capped a chaotic final minute that featured multiple criticisms, a wedgie that led to a jump ball, two costly turnovers by the 76ers, two and-1s by Clippers star Kawhi Leonard and, finally, Oubre’s drive that led to it He was on the floor as the Clippers got a needed win in James Harden’s first game in South Philly since being traded.

The nurse rushed onto the scene to dispute the no-call and had to be restrained by his assistants. Oubre also got involved, pointing at each of the three officials — Scott, JB DeRosa and Brandon Adair — before being pulled away.

“First and foremost, the heat of the moment,” Oubre said when asked about his actions after the game. “It’s obviously an intense basketball game. And we are not perfect. The referees are not perfect. I want to apologize for just losing it, because that’s what I try to work on every day and try to represent God as best as I can, and that wasn’t it. So I just ask for forgiveness.

“But I saw Coach Nurse get upset, and if our coach fights for us and he goes there, I’m right behind him. But at the end of the day it wasn’t cool. So I’m going to do it.’ Take the penalties that come with it and you have to move on, but I have to get better in some ways.

For his part, Nurse admitted that the 76ers contributed to their own downfall.

“Well, at 104-101 we had the ball on the sideline, [and] Tyrese [Maxey] breaks way into the backcourt, slips and falls, and that gets them 1-1,” Nurse said. “We come down and score, they’re full-court press and they throw one out of bounds from Kelly.”

But the nurse also said some late calls should have gone the other way.

“I find [Oubre] “I took it pretty hard there,” the nurse said. “I watched it a few times on our computers. I thought it was definitely a touch, certainly with the last two or three calling And-1s on the other end.

“I thought there was enough contact to call. [But] That’s how it is sometimes.”

For both teams, the end of the game took on a desperation befitting their recent play. Philadelphia is now 13-26 this season when playing without reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid, who is inching closer to a return from surgery he suffered on his left lateral meniscus seven weeks ago.

With the loss, the 76ers now sit in eighth place in the Eastern Conference after missing a chance to make up ground on the sixth-seeded Indiana Pacers, who lost to Chicago on Wednesday.

“I always say the same thing,” Maxey said. “I know every time we step on the field we try to win, but if we can get Big Fella back we just have to go in the right direction. I feel like whoever we play when we get to the playoffs or whatever the situation is, I feel like we have a great chance and opportunity with him on our team.

“So us, the other guys, we have to go in the right direction, do all the little things and go out and play extremely aggressive on defense and play the right way so that when he comes back we can keep going.”

The Clippers, meanwhile, suffered a pair of home losses to the 76ers and Pacers and began a four-game trip to the East Coast on Wednesday after getting into a dogfight not only for their current fourth place spot in the West, but just a few of those Games in front of the entrance areas.

All of that overshadowed Harden’s first game in Philadelphia since the trade, when the future Hall of Famer had 16 points and 14 assists in 39 minutes. He was booed during the substitution and in the first quarter, but as the game progressed his comeback faded into the background and it turned into a competitive game with a frenetic ending.

“I expected it,” Harden said of the reaction. “I don’t really know what it’s about, but I expected it.

“It is like it is. I don’t know why they booed.”
