The project, which is entirely funded by federal dollars, involves removing the existing bridge and replacing it with a new, single-span, prestressed concrete bridge. The new design aims to provide additional vertical clearance, enhancing safety and efficiency of the roadway. South State, Inc., based in Bridgeton, N.J., has been selected as the general contractor for this critical infrastructure project. PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is gearing up for a significant phase in its $7.8 million project aimed at replacing the deteriorating ramp and structure connecting southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) to southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) in Philadelphia’s Hunting Park section. This ambitious endeavor, entirely funded by federal dollars, promises to enhance safety and traffic flow but not without temporary disruptions to daily commutes.
Starting from 9:00 AM on Monday, April 1, through to 9:00 AM on Wednesday, April 3, the southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) ramp will be completely shut down around the clock. During this period, motorists typically using this route are advised to divert via Wyoming Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) to reach U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue). Additionally, throughout the week of April 1 to April 5, drivers can expect periodic single left lane closures on both northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) between Wyoming Avenue and 16th Street, scheduled from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and again from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning.
The extensive project involves removing the existing bridge — a single-span, steel plate girder structure — over U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) and erecting a new, single-span, prestressed, precast concrete bridge in its place. The new design aims to provide additional vertical clearance, thereby enhancing the overall safety and efficiency of the roadway.
Moreover, the project encompasses a range of improvements, including constructing retaining wall extensions on the approaches to the new bridge, full-depth paving, and the installation of new sidewalk, ADA-compliant curb ramps, a new traffic signal, highway lighting, guiderail, and pavement markings.
South State, Inc., based in Bridgeton, N.J., has been selected as the general contractor for this critical infrastructure project. Given the scale of the work and its potential impact on traffic, PennDOT urges motorists to plan for extra travel time or seek alternative routes when navigating the area.
