Ivan Fedotov joins Philadelphia Flyers after KHL player CSKA Moscow terminates goalkeeper’s contract

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Ivan Fedotov's complicated journey from Russia to the Philadelphia Flyers is now complete. The Flyers announced Friday morning that Ivan Fedotov, a goalkeeper for the Philadelphia Flyers, has joined the team after CSKA Moscow of the KHL terminated his contract with the Russian league. Fedotv was drafted by the Flyers in the seventh round of the 2015 NHL draft and later signed his entry-level contract in May 2022, but was taken away by Russian authorities to a remote military base in the Arctic Circle for a year of service. The International Ice Hockey Federation ruled in August that Fedotrov had a valid NHL contract for the 2023-2024 season and allowed him to join the team immediately. This decision paved the way for him to jump to North America after the NHL cut ties with Russia following the Ukraine war.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Ivan Fedotov’s complicated journey from Russia to the Philadelphia Flyers is now complete. The Flyers announced Friday morning that Fedotov will join the team after CSKA Moscow of the KHL terminated the goaltender’s contract.

CSKA terminated Fedotov’s contract on Thursday, which had one year remaining.

The KHL team said on its website: “The club thanks Ivan Fedotov and wishes him the best of luck in his further career.”

The 27-year-old Fedotov was drafted by the Flyers in the seventh round of the 2015 NHL draft. He later signed his entry-level contract in May 2022 and indicated at the Beijing Olympics that he planned to make a jump to the NHL to make.

Instead of, Fedotov was taken away by Russian authorities to a remote military base in the Arctic Circle for a year of service, his agent said in July 2022.

Fedotov completed his military service last summer and subsequently signed a two-year contract with CSKA. The International Ice Hockey Federation last August ruled in favor of the Flyers, saying Fedotov had a valid NHL contract for the 2023-2024 season. The IIHF ruling created a path for Fedotov to jump ship to North America.

The NHL cut ties with Russia after the war in Ukraine, leading to complicated relations between the league and the KHL. According to The Associated Press, there is no transfer agreement between the two leagues.

The AP reported last August that the IIHF — the hockey world’s board of governors — ruled that CSKA’s contract with Fedotov was a “violation of international transfer rules because Fedotov was not released from his contract with the Flyers.” IIHF sanctioned CSKA and gave Fedotov a four-month suspension.

Fedotov played 49 games for CSKA in the 2023-2024 season until March 8. The KHL team was eliminated in the first round of the KHL’s Gagarin Cup playoffs.

Per CapFriendly, Fedotov has a one-year contract with the Flyers.

Fedotov was able to join the team immediately. The Flyers have relied on goaltender Samuel Ersson since Carter Hart was placed on leave. Heart is one of the five players accused of sexual assault in the 2018 Hockey Canada survey.

Philadelphia has since used Felix Sandstrom and Cal Peterson as backups. Fedotov could offer the team an upgrade.

The Flyers (36-28-10) currently hold a playoff spot with eight games remaining.
