After taking the first game of their three-game series against the Boston Red Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies have once again risen in the standings. Holding onto the narrowest of leads for the best record in baseball, the Phillies have proven resilient to maintain their spot above the red-hot New York Yankees.
Thanks to that resiliency, the Phillies’ odds of winning the World Series this year have been boosted yet again.

The Phillies have been criticized at times over their rather light schedule, but they’ve also faced their fair share of adversity, including several lineup injuries and the confounding decision to roll Taijuan Walker out to the mound every fifth start. Despite all that, the Phillies continue to roll, and so do their odds.
World Series Odds: Phillies odds are now just +600 to win it all
Coming off of a disappointing loss to close the London series, the Phils returned to the States to a daunting six-game road schedule. To make matters worse, the news that star catcher J.T. Realmuto was to undergo knee surgery to remove a portion of his meniscus sent shockwaves through the fanbase, especially those who are fans of both the Phillies and the local basketball team, the Philadelphia 76ers.
While Philadelphia is just one game into that six-game road trip, they responded well, defeating the Boston RedSox at Fenway by a final score of 4-1. Perhaps most important was the dominant effort by Zack Wheeler, who allowed just one earned run over seven innings. Dominating is nothing new for Wheeler, but to word on him was that he struggles with prolonged rest, and prefers to have Realmuto call his game. In this matchup, he succeeded nonetheless.
With eight days of rest and reserve catcher Garrett Stubbs behind the plate, Wheeler and the bullpen were as efficient as ever, keeping Boston off the board from the second inning on.
Philadelphia is on pace to win 113 games this season. That would be the fourth-best record in the history of Major League Baseball. Will this pace hold up? Likely not. Not only due to Realmuto’s injury, but the schedule does have its fair share of difficulty ahead, and to maintain this level of success over a 162-game schedule is simply difficult. Still, finishing above 100 wins is certainly on the table, something the Phillies have only accomplished three times in their 140-year history.
Of course, wins mean nothing unless it includes winning it all in the World Series. The Phillies are recognized as a legitimate contender, holding the third-best odds to win it all, but if they can maintain this pace and prove themselves against even more capable competition, Philadelphia could continue to rise even further up the odds board.
