Allergy sufferers welcomed Friday’s rain as it helps wash away pollen that has appeared early after such a mild winter this year.

Some allergy symptoms include sneezing, itching, stuffy eyes, itchy or watery eyes, feeling of pressure and facial pain.

Mother Nature is to blame for these unpleasant reactions. With an early spring on the horizon, allergens are showing up much earlier than expected.

dr Marc F. Goldstein is an allergist at the Asthma Center, which has been testing pollen levels for 30 years. Over the past decade, the center has seen not only an increase in pollen, but also a longer pollen season.

“Earlier start and extension of fall pollen season to late October,” noted Dr. gold stone

In the center on North Broad Street, experts have what they call a “pollen detection machine” they can use to test the air.

“We can see what pollen and mold are in real time,” said Dr. gold stone

Thanks to the rain, pollen levels are likely to drop.

“It’ll wash pollen out of the air, but tomorrow’s going to be a pretty robust day. As we’ve seen over the past week or so,” the doctor noted.

It will definitely be an extended season, starting three to four weeks earlier than usual.

So what should you do?

If you’re outside enjoying nature, go home, change, and shower.

Use air conditioning instead of open windows to cool your home, and if you have a lawn, tending and preventing weeds can keep allergens from showing up.
