BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Wells Fargo will close its downtown Bethlehem branch in August, and is directing customers to use offices in South Bethlehem, the Westgate Mall and Allentown as digital finance marches on.
The branch at 52 W. Broad St. is in an imposing Greek Revival-style building with columns, a block from Main Street. It is also just west of the site of the former Boyd Theater, which is being converted to apartments.
Wells Fargo has closed several branches in the region as customers move toward banking by phone, not in offices.
"Wells Fargo remains committed to Bethlehem and branches continue to play an important role in the way we serve our customers in combination with our online and mobile channels and ATMS," the statement said.
"As customer preferences and transaction patterns change, so will our branches. Wells Fargo has made the decision to close the Broad Street branch on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at 11:00 a.m."
The bank's Fourth Street branch on the Southside is about a mile away. A sign at the bank also suggests the Westgate Mall branch and an office at 1602 Union Blvd., Allentown.
Northampton County property records say the building was built in 1925. The owner is listed as Union Bank and Trust.
The San Francisco-based bank was founded in 1852 by Henry Wells and William Fargo. Its wagons carried goods and precious metals in America's frontier days, inspiring the song, "The Wells Fargo Wagon" from the "The Music Man."
Wells Fargo is one of America's Big Four banks, along with Citigroup, Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase.
Shares in Wells Fargo are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol WFC. At 12:37 p.m. Wednesday, the shares traded at $57.60, giving the company a market capitalization of $203.6 billion.
In the past 52 weeks, shares in Wells Fargo have traded as high as $62.55 and as low as $38.39.
